Bamboo Agro Forestry is a bamboo planting project with 3 missions

FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE

ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE AGROFORESTRY

BUSINESS FOR THE COMMUNITY

Introduction to Bamboo Agro Forestry

REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS

Bamboo acts as a natural carbon reservoir. Thanks to its fast-growing properties, bamboo absorbs carbon from the atmosphere and stores a large amount of carbon in its stem. Bamboo is often used as a durable material, so the absorbed carbon will be “locked” during the process the bamboo material is in use.

Bamboo can replace materials with high carbon emissions such as PVC, steel and concrete whilst reducing demands for other timber resources.

LAND AND FOREST RECOVERY

One of the project’s goals is to transform land with poor growing potential and unsustainable forests into sustainable bamboo forests.

With a fast biomass rate, huge network of roots and rhizomes, root systems interwoven and growing in the soil surface layer (20 – 60cm deep) can reach 100km per hectare, helping to hold and protect the ground layer, prevent erosion and leaching of nutrients, and maintain soil moisture. This contributes to creating a favourable environment for improving soil and regenerating degraded soil.

Additionally, bamboo acts as a reservoir by collecting and storing large amounts of water in its rhizomes and stems during the rainy season and returning water to the soil, rivers and streams during times of drought. Together with the root system, which helps limit water vapor loss, this increases groundwater levels, creating a suitable living environment for downstream and surrounding areas.

SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY

Bamboo with its superior properties; fast growing rate, ability to regenerate, and harvest without replanting makes it a sustainable source for wood to meet the increasing global demand for timber. Bamboo wood is also processed to make furniture, construction materials, fuel and other products with high economic value. Using Bamboo wood will bring economic benefits without harming the environment, as well as contribute to combat global climate change.

There is also added economic value growing under the bamboo canopy, such as mushrooms and medicinal herbs. This help diversify income sources, creating sustainable business opportunities for local communities whilst protecting the ecosystem. Harnessing these will help diversify sources of income

CREATING JOBS AND PROVIDE AGRUCULTUAL TRAINING

It is important to the company that the project employs local farmers to carry out the planting – tending to the crops – and harvest the final product. This will allow for an increase in local household incomes and improve living standards.

Proper, natural and organic agricultural practices are important to develop sustainable agriculture. In the localities where Bamboo Agro Forestry is being implemented, the project will coordinate with local authorities to periodically organize short-term training courses for farmers on sustainable agricultural practices, undertaken by project engineers in coordination with experts in the field.

EDUCATION & POVERTY REDUCTION FUND

Bamboo Agro Forestry recognise that education is key to achieve sustainable communities, particularly important for children in mountainous and remote areas who will inherit agriculture.

The project and its partners (Growing Participants, Farmers’ partners) commit to deduct a part of profits from business activities to a fund which will sponsor education for children living in such areas.

The project also commits to deduct a portion of profits from business activities to fund poverty reduction activities, helping farming households escape poverty sustainably with the following methods:

Training + Initial funding + Output support = Escaping poverty

The fund is not managed directly by Bamboo Agro Forestry, but handled by partnering professional organizations which will ensure the funding is used effectively and for the right purposes.

YOU CAN HELP PLANT MORE TREES

In order to stand out from other forestry companies, Bamboo Agro Forestry implemented a Bamboo Planting Participation model where people from all over the world can take part in the bamboo planting project. Through Bamboo4Saving you can purchase a Bamboo planting package, and we will plant, care for and harvest your bamboo. Through your purchase you will contribute to increasing resilience to climate change, reducing potential for disastrous impacts and contribute to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable society.
